Also known as wet socks or magic socks, this is a staple hydrotherapy technique in naturopathic medicine for immune support.
Warming socks are great to do at first onset of a cold and for symptoms like fever, headaches, sore throat, cough, and congestion.
The cold socks cause the blood vessels in the feet to constrict, making the body shunt blood to the area and ultimately increasing systemic circulation. Our blood delivers oxygen, nutrients, and immune cells throughout the body and stimulates the healing process.
This technique also helps promote deeper, more restful sleep.
Soak the cotton socks in ice cold water or thoroughly wet the socks and pop them in the freezer for 10-15 minutes.
Take a hot bath or shower to warm the body.
Grab the cold socks and put them on. Immediately put the thick wool socks on over them.
Go to sleep with the socks on & let the body do its magic! The socks will be dry in the morning.
The beauty of hydrotherapy is that it is safe for all ages! For younger children under 6 months, the cold socks do not have to be ice cold, simply run them under cooler water.
Incorporating wet sock hydrotherapy into your wellness routine is a simple yet powerful way to support your immune system during times of illness. As always, listen to your body and consult your healthcare provider to ensure it's the right fit for you. Stay proactive in your self-care and give your immune system the support it needs!
